Ford Targets Budget Market With $28,350 Electric Fathom Truck
Ford is challenging the electric vehicle market with the Fathom, a midsize truck priced at $28,350 that promises full features where competitors offer stripped-down utility. By leveraging a new modular assembly platform, the automaker aims to undercut the minimalist Slate Truck while maintaining standard modern comforts.

The Fathom distinguishes itself from budget rivals like the Slate Truck by refusing to sacrifice basic amenities. While the Slate achieves its $24,950 price point by omitting power windows, touchscreens, and stereo systems, Ford’s model includes a high-resolution display with integrated Apple Maps, alongside support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The vehicle is designed with a spacious interior exceeding that of a Toyota RAV4 and includes both a traditional truck bed and a front trunk.
Beyond standard cabin tech, the base model comes equipped with the hardware necessary for Ford’s Blue Cruise hands-free driving system. While the software subscription requires an additional fee—currently structured as a $2,495 one-time purchase or a $495 annual charge—the inclusion of the sensor suite marks a significant departure from the bare-bones approach of current low-cost electric startups. Ford intends to achieve this pricing through its Universal Electric Vehicle platform, which utilizes parallel assembly lines to increase production volume and drive down manufacturing costs.
