Christopher Nolan to film The Odyssey entirely on IMAX stock

The production required IMAX to overhaul its hardware, resulting in cameras that are 30 percent quieter and significantly lighter than previous iterations. Gelfond noted that Nolan demanded solutions to specific technical hurdles, forcing the company to refine its film recorders and camera systems. Beyond the hardware, IMAX developed new scanning and processing techniques to expedite the review of footage during production. These tools will remain exclusive to the production of The Odyssey before becoming available to other filmmakers.

Nolan’s commitment to the format began with 2008’s The Dark Knight and has evolved through subsequent projects, including the specialized black-and-white 65mm film stock created for Oppenheimer. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who collaborated on that project, returns to lead the visual direction for this new epic. While Avengers: Infinity War previously utilized IMAX hardware for its entire duration, it relied on digital capture, leaving Nolan’s latest venture as the first to push the physical film medium to this scale.
