Joseph Natale to succeed Scott Powers as Sun Life chair
After serving a full term, Scott Powers will step down as chair of the Sun Life Financial board following the company’s annual meeting on May 5, 2027. His successor, Joseph Natale, who joined the board in 2023, is set to take the helm pending his re-election at the meeting.

Natale brings three decades of executive experience to the role, having previously led major Canadian firms including Rogers Communications and TELUS. His background spans digital transformation, corporate strategy, and large-scale acquisitions, skills that Sun Life executives expect will bolster the company's global ambitions in asset management and insurance. Currently, Natale leads the board's Management Resource Committee and serves on the Risk Committee.
Beyond his work at Sun Life, Natale holds a board position as lead independent director at Shopify and serves as a senior advisor at the private equity firm Altas Partners. Reflecting on the transition, Powers praised his successor's expertise in technology enablement and customer experience as key assets for the firm’s future. Natale, who began his professional life as a software engineer, stated he is energized by the company's diversified strategy and commitment to long-term shareholder value.
