RWE Abandons Offshore Wind Projects in $1.22 Billion Settlement

German energy giant RWE has agreed to relinquish its offshore wind leases off the coasts of New York, California, and Louisiana, securing a $1.22 billion settlement with the U.S. Department of the Interior that effectively redirects the company’s capital toward fossil fuel infrastructure projects.

The agreement marks the fifth and largest wind energy buyout orchestrated by the administration this year. RWE confirmed it will pivot its investments, allocating $900 million toward a stake in a Louisiana liquefied natural gas facility and $300 million to support a series of natural gas peaking projects across the United States. The firm stated that it saw no viable path to secure permits for its wind ventures, leading to the decision to resolve outstanding claims.

Critics have denounced the settlement as a targeted blow to renewable energy development. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described the move as a misuse of public resources, while Representative Jared Huffman accused the administration of paying firms to walk away from clean energy in favor of oil and gas. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum countered these claims, asserting that the funds represent a repurposing of the company’s own capital rather than a taxpayer expenditure.

Despite the administration’s efforts to stall renewable projects, the BlueGreen Alliance estimates that previous buyouts have already resulted in the loss of over 57,000 projected jobs and 21.15 gigawatts of potential energy capacity. Legal challenges remain, with a coalition of state attorneys general led by New York’s Letitia James continuing to fight the administration’s efforts to dismantle these wind initiatives in court.
