Boehringer Ingelheim Honors Emerging Veterinary Research Talent

More than 500 veterinary students and industry experts gathered in Raleigh, North Carolina, from August 6–8 for the 2026 Veterinary Scholars Symposium. The event, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and hosted by NC State, highlighted the next wave of scientific innovation in animal health through hands-on research and collaborative mentorship.

The symposium serves as the annual centerpiece of the Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Program, a nearly 40-year initiative designed to cultivate biomedical research talent. By pairing early-career students with established professionals, the program aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and complex clinical challenges in animal medicine.

This year’s awards recognized two standout researchers for their specialized contributions. Isha Chauhan, a DVM/PhD student at Cornell University, earned the 2026 Boehringer Ingelheim Research Award for Veterinary Students for her genome-wide association study on early equine pregnancy loss. Her analysis of over 400 samples identified specific genetic mutations that may eventually lead to improved prenatal screening tools for horses and offer insights into human reproductive health. Kevin Gustafson, DVM, PhD, received the award for Graduate Veterinarians. His research at the University of Missouri explored the link between maternal gut microbiomes and fetal neurodevelopment, providing new data on how gut metabolites influence long-term offspring behavior and metabolism.

Beyond the symposium, Boehringer Ingelheim maintains an extensive educational pipeline, including vaccine donations to veterinary schools and a $2.5 million commitment from the Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation to address systemic challenges within the veterinary profession. These efforts underscore a long-term investment strategy intended to sustain the industry’s workforce and scientific capabilities through 2027 and beyond.
