YouTube Doubles Monetization Thresholds for Creators

Starting February 1, 2027, the barrier to entry for YouTube’s Partner Program will shift significantly as the platform demands 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20 million Shorts views. This move doubles the previous requirements, signaling a strategic pivot toward premium content standards rather than high-volume casual uploads.

The current mandate of 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views will become obsolete, forcing smaller channels to accelerate their growth or face exclusion from ad revenue. While creators must maintain 10 million Shorts views every 90 days to retain access to the Shorts Creator Pool, falling below this specific metric will not trigger a total removal from the broader partner ecosystem.

YouTube justifies these tighter restrictions by pointing to the expansion of its Premium Lite subscription service. By distributing revenue based on watch time—allocating 55 percent to long-form content and 45 percent to Shorts—the platform claims that Premium users generate higher average earnings for partners than ad-supported viewers. This transition mirrors the platform’s broader ambition to function as a premium television service, evidenced by recent deals with high-profile talent like Trevor Noah and the introduction of seasonal video organization tools. As YouTube pushes to compete directly with services like Netflix and Disney Plus, the burden of proof for monetization shifts firmly onto the creators to deliver high-retention, professional-grade output.
