A California startup, Reflect Orbital, has secured federal approval to deploy Eärendil-1, a satellite equipped with an 18-square-meter mirror. The project aims to reflect sunlight onto specific locations on Earth at night, potentially creating a fleet of 50,000 reflectors to provide on-demand light for solar farms, agriculture, and urban infrastructure.

The concept revives century-old dreams of orbital illumination, most notably Russia’s 1990s Znamya experiments. By angling these mirrors, the company intends to project 5-kilometer-wide beams of light to assist in search and rescue missions, accelerate construction schedules, or boost renewable energy production.
