Cambrex Invests $30 Million in Milan R&D Expansion
Marking eight decades of pharmaceutical production, Cambrex has broken ground on a $30 million research facility at its Milan site. The project aims to bolster the company’s analytical and process development capabilities, positioning the legacy location to handle increasingly complex small molecule therapies for global clients.

The expansion at the Profarmico Milano campus is slated for completion in the second half of 2027. Beyond the new laboratory space, the company has secured additional land adjacent to the existing site to facilitate further infrastructure growth. This investment follows a recent celebration of the facility’s 80th anniversary, an milestone that highlights its long-standing role in the European pharmaceutical sector.
Claudio Russolo, Chief Operating Officer at Cambrex, described the project as a commitment to both technological advancement and the site’s workforce. By upgrading its production plants and R&D infrastructure, the company intends to meet rising demand for specialized CDMO services while maintaining its focus on complex drug substance development.
