Vatn Systems Partners with Taiwan to Advance Undersea Autonomous Defense
Taiwan’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology has joined forces with Rhode Island-based Vatn Systems to accelerate the development of autonomous underwater capabilities. This memorandum of understanding signals a shift toward modular, AI-driven maritime defense strategies designed to modernize the island’s naval infrastructure against evolving regional security threats.

The partnership focuses on integrating Vatn’s autonomous underwater vehicles—such as the S12 model—into Taiwan’s existing naval framework. By shifting toward AI-enabled command-and-control systems, both organizations aim to bypass the prohibitive costs often associated with legacy maritime defense platforms. The scope of the agreement extends beyond hardware to include the creation of local supply chains and sustainment infrastructure, ensuring that Taiwan can maintain these high-tech assets domestically.
Nelson Mills, CEO of Vatn Systems, described the collaboration as a vital step in scaling affordable undersea autonomy for allied nations. The move follows the company’s recent unveiling of SIGURD, a specialized mine countermeasure system. For NCSIST, the primary administrative body for Taiwan’s weapon development, this cooperation provides a direct path to adopting modular defense technologies that can be rapidly tailored to specific mission requirements.
