FibroBiologics Secures Patent to Boost Islet Transplant Survival
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted FibroBiologics patent No. 12,691,147, covering a method to improve the survival and integration of transplanted insulin-producing islets. By utilizing fibroblast cells to optimize the transplant microenvironment, the Houston-based company aims to overcome the critical failure rates currently limiting Type 1 diabetes treatment.

Type 1 diabetes remains a significant medical challenge, driven by the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. While islet transplantation offers a pathway to restore endogenous insulin production, its clinical impact is hampered by a chronic shortage of donor pancreases and high rates of graft loss shortly after surgery. Fibroblasts, which produce essential extracellular matrix proteins and angiogenic factors, are designed in this patented approach to reduce cellular stress and improve vascularization for the transplanted tissue.
"One of the greatest limitations facing islet transplantation is that many transplanted islets fail to survive the critical period immediately after implantation," said Pete O'Heeron, founder and CEO of FibroBiologics. By enhancing the efficiency of donor tissue, the company expects to expand access to curative therapies for a larger patient population. Beyond diabetes, this intellectual property—part of a portfolio exceeding 270 patents—points to broader applications for fibroblasts in tissue regeneration and other transplantation procedures.
