Dolby Laboratories Acquires FAU Video Compression Patent Portfolio
Dolby Laboratories has acquired a massive intellectual property portfolio from Florida Atlantic University, securing 683 assets including 250 patents developed by university researchers. The acquisition centers on advanced video-compression technology that significantly reduces data requirements while maintaining high visual quality for global streaming and broadcasting markets.
The portfolio represents the culmination of a long-standing partnership between the university and OP Solutions, LLC. FAU faculty, led by Hari Kalva, Borko Furht, and Velibor Adzic, conducted the foundational research, while OP Solutions provided strategic commercialization support. The resulting technology was instrumental in the creation of the Versatile Video Coding standard, or H.266, which improves data efficiency by approximately 50% over its predecessor.
Beyond consumer streaming, the technology holds significant utility for national security, autonomous systems, and robotics. By optimizing video transmission, the research enables real-time operations in bandwidth-constrained environments like drones and satellite communications. Sixteen of the developed patents are now declared essential to the VVC standard and are being deployed through the Access Advance patent pool. This deal marks a significant transition of academic research into a core component of the global media technology infrastructure.
