National Kidney Foundation Launches First Kidney Hero Awards

The campaign highlights the diverse realities of the disease, featuring nominees ranging from transplant recipients and living donors to dedicated healthcare professionals. Each participant has established a fundraising page, with all proceeds directly supporting the foundation’s mission to increase access to equitable care, drive medical innovation, and reduce the prevalence of preventable kidney conditions. Dr. Marc Hurlbert, CEO of the National Kidney Foundation, noted that the nominees represent the resilience required to turn personal health crises into leadership and advocacy efforts.

Among the nominees are individuals like Melanie, who turned to social media to build a support network during her dialysis journey, and the Ransome family, who have become vocal advocates for pediatric kidney health following their son’s diagnosis. Other recognized figures include Larry, a health advocate who returned to his musical career post-transplant, and Joanna Neumann, a veteran nurse dedicated to patient education. The campaign culminates on August 18 with Kidney Heroes Giving Day. The nominee who secures the most community support will be officially crowned the first Kidney Hero of the Year on August 19.
