Dr. Syretta James Leads APA Effort to Modernize Psychology Licensure

The proposed revisions aim to provide states with a consistent regulatory roadmap, addressing workforce shortages without sacrificing patient safety. By establishing formal licensure standards for master’s-level professionals, the APA intends to widen the pipeline of qualified providers available to underserved populations, including those within correctional facilities where behavioral health needs are particularly acute.

Dr. James, who serves as Chief Behavioral Health Officer at Armor Health, emphasizes that the profession must evolve to remain sustainable. The task force recommendations are scheduled for review by the APA Council of Representatives in February 2027. If adopted, these guidelines will act as a foundational template for states looking to modernize their own psychology licensure laws to better reflect current clinical realities.
