The Billion-User Race: Google and OpenAI Reach AI Milestone
A billion people now engage with Gemini every month, cementing its status as Google’s fastest-growing product to date. This milestone, confirmed by CEO Sundar Pichai, places the search giant in direct competition with OpenAI, which quietly verified that ChatGPT also surpassed the one-billion-user mark earlier this summer.
OpenAI reached the threshold weeks before Google, though the company chose to tuck the achievement into a routine update regarding user workflows. While external analysts estimated the crossover occurred as early as June, spokesperson Lindsay McCallum clarified that the platform hit one billion weekly users by July.
Growth trajectories for both services reveal shifting momentum. OpenAI, previously celebrated for record-breaking adoption, saw its expansion pace temper since February, when it reported 900 million weekly active users. Conversely, Google’s Gemini surged from 750 million monthly users in February to its current peak, fueled by deep integration across the company's existing ecosystem. Other competitors, such as Anthropic’s Claude, continue to expand, though the firm maintains strict secrecy regarding its specific user metrics.
