National CineMedia Acquires Digital Network Captivate from Generation Partners
National CineMedia has acquired Captivate Holdings, the North American digital out-of-home media leader, from private equity firm Generation Partners. The deal marks the end of a 13-year ownership cycle for Generation, which transformed the screen network into a programmatic-ready platform reaching millions in premium office and residential spaces.

Generation Partners acquired Captivate in 2013, implementing a strategy focused on long-term capital investment rather than financial leverage. Under the tenure of CEO Marc Kidd and Chairman Mark Shapiro, the company modernized its infrastructure, enabling high-quality video delivery and programmatic advertising access across its 26,000-screen footprint. The network currently operates in 170 U.S. and Canadian markets, targeting professional audiences in high-traffic commercial and residential environments.
John Hawkins, co-founder of Generation Partners, noted that the firm navigated significant pandemic-era headwinds by maintaining low debt levels and prioritizing core business growth. Following the sale to National CineMedia—the largest cinema advertising platform in the U.S.—Captivate is expected to leverage NCM’s scale to further its expansion. Solomon Partners and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher acted as advisors for Captivate, while BofA Securities and Hogan Lovells represented National CineMedia.
