Kid Spark and Special Olympics Washington Launch Inclusive STEM Program

The program integrates children's literature with the Early Inventors STEM Lab, tasking young learners with designing solutions that make sports more accessible. Lessons begin with read-aloud sessions based on the Special Olympics Washington Young Readers program, transitioning into engineering challenges that encourage students to build prototypes. This approach is designed to support both academic and social-emotional growth, ensuring children develop confidence and communication skills alongside technical proficiency.

Built on Universal Design for Learning principles, the curriculum is adaptable for classrooms, afterschool programs, and community settings. Kid Spark Executive Director Ryan Neden emphasized that the partnership provides a critical foundation for students to view engineering as a tool for creating inclusive opportunities. According to Morgan Larche, Director of Unified Schools at Special Olympics Washington, the collaboration expands the organization's Unified Champion Schools model by providing educators with versatile tools that accommodate diverse learning needs.
