Breakthrough T1D Launches Global Marathon Series to Fund Diabetes Research

Ten major international races serve as the backdrop for the 2026-2027 Breakthrough T1D Run season. The initiative aims to mobilize a global community of athletes to generate critical funding for type 1 diabetes research, moving beyond traditional advocacy to unite runners behind the shared goal of finding a cure.

The campaign features participation in high-profile events including the BMW Berlin Marathon, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and the TCS New York City Marathon. Beyond these marquee endurance races, the organization has introduced the 'My Run' option, allowing supporters to set their own distances and course goals independently. This flexibility ensures that participants can engage with the mission through local events or personal challenges at any point throughout the year.

Anthony Geraci, the organization's National Director of Endurance Programs, noted that the effort transforms miles into tangible support for those managing the autoimmune condition. With roughly 9.5 million people affected worldwide, the program highlights the reality that T1D is not limited to childhood, as nearly half of all diagnoses now occur in adulthood. Prospective runners can register or find additional information through the organization’s dedicated portal at run.BreakthroughT1D.org.
