Sunshine Silver Mining Targets 2028 Production Restart

Following a successful public listing in June, Idaho-based Sunshine Silver Mining & Refining is accelerating development at its flagship mine in the Silver Valley. With $288.7 million in cash reserves, the company is now prioritizing feasibility studies and infrastructure upgrades to bring the historic site back to active production by late 2028.

CEO Heather White confirmed that the capital raised during the company’s recent IPO provides the necessary runway to finalize technical assessments and expand drilling operations. Current efforts center on the Sunshine Mine, which holds an indicated resource of 103.9 million ounces of silver. To support the planned transition from development to extraction, the company is decommissioning old mill facilities to make room for a new plant designed to process 2,000 tonnes per day, doubling the base case capacity.

Beyond basic silver extraction, the firm is exploring a vertically integrated model. Feasibility studies are currently examining the restart of a silver-copper refinery and the construction of an antimony plant capable of supplying roughly 60% of projected U.S. demand. While the company reported a net loss of $16.7 million for the second quarter of 2026—driven largely by pre-development costs and the expenses of operating as a public entity—management maintains that the high-grade drill results justify the aggressive infrastructure investment. A final decision on the mine’s full-scale restart is expected following the completion of a comprehensive feasibility study in the second quarter of 2027.
