Cook County Treasurer Honors Local Pakistani Community
More than 50,000 residents of Pakistani descent are being honored this week as Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas and Consul General Zaman Mehdi host a reception marking the 79th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence, following a traditional flag-raising ceremony held today at Daley Plaza.
The event serves to celebrate the cultural heritage and civic contributions of the Pakistani diaspora in the region. Following the noon-time ceremony at the plaza, participants moved to the County Building at 118 N. Clark Street to recognize individuals who have shaped the local landscape through entrepreneurship, media, and community advocacy.
During the reception, Pappas presented Certificates of Excellence to fifteen community leaders, including medical professional Dr. Asif Syed, journalist Aftab Mehboob, and Urdu Institute President Amin Haider. The honors reflect the diverse impact of the Pakistani community, ranging from the arts and education to business development. This annual recognition marks the 1947 partition that established Pakistan as a sovereign nation, an occasion now observed by the diaspora to highlight their ongoing integration and commitment to the vibrancy of Cook County.
