Link Freedom Group Files Record-Breaking 300 TLD Applications
With a massive investment totaling tens of millions of dollars, Malta-based Link Freedom Group has submitted over 300 top-level domain applications to ICANN. This move, the largest single filing in the organization's 2026 window, signals an aggressive attempt to reshape digital identity and internet infrastructure for a new era.
The filing arrives during the first ICANN generic top-level domain application round since 2012, marking a decade of pent-up demand for namespace expansion. Under the leadership of newly appointed CEO Vaughn Liley, the company aims to decentralize the influence currently held by a handful of infrastructure incumbents. Liley argues that the existing domain landscape remains anchored in an era that predates the rise of modern digital identity, social media, and Web3 integration.
To differentiate its strategy, LFG is breaking from industry norms by voluntarily disclosing its full list of proposed TLDs before the official ICANN Reveal Day in October. The portfolio spans diverse sectors, including AI-focused strings like .llm and .quantum, commerce-oriented domains such as .cart and .brand, and Web3 identifiers like .btc and .nft. The company intends to leverage its background as the operator of the .link registry to scale this model into a vertically integrated namespace authority. Following the evaluation process, successful applicants are expected to begin launching these new domains in 2027 and early 2028.
