Microsoft Consolidates AI Assistants Into Unified Copilot Interface
Microsoft is streamlining its fragmented AI ecosystem by merging personal and commercial Copilot assistants into a single, unified application. This transition, which effectively retires the dual-app structure, serves as the architectural foundation for a more expansive 'super app' platform slated for release later this year.
The updated interface, which retains the Microsoft Copilot branding, integrates standard chat and image generation capabilities with the enterprise-grade power of Microsoft 365. By consolidating these services, the company intends to eliminate redundant icons from system trays and taskbars, simplifying the user experience across both personal and professional accounts. Current users will have their existing chat histories and content migrated automatically to the new version.
Deployment begins in mid-August for mobile and web platforms, with desktop versions for Windows and Mac scheduled to follow in mid-September. While general users will be prompted to download the new app, Windows Insiders may see these changes take effect as early as this week. For existing Microsoft 365 Copilot subscribers, the transition will primarily involve minor navigation adjustments and a refreshed visual identity.
