Microsoft Retires Mico Avatar from Copilot Voice Mode

Launched last October by AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, Mico was intended to provide the chatbot with a distinct personality. The avatar utilized real-time facial expressions and animations to respond to user input, an attempt to bridge the gap between cold software and conversational warmth. Microsoft confirmed the transition in a support document, noting that the character’s design phase served its purpose in teaching developers how users prefer to interact with generative AI.

The removal of Mico follows a familiar pattern for Microsoft, which has previously phased out virtual assistants including Cortana, the search dog Rover, and the iconic office paperclip, Clippy. This latest adjustment coincides with the company’s initiative to merge the standalone Copilot app with Microsoft 365 Copilot. The strategy shift arrives during a period of internal restructuring, with Jacob Andreou now overseeing Copilot operations while Mustafa Suleyman pivots toward the development of next-generation AI models.
