Chemular Unveils Safeguard Mark I to Secure Nicotine Pouch Packaging

Nicotine pouch manufacturers face a tightening regulatory landscape, struggling to implement child-resistant packaging without triggering costly product redesigns or jeopardizing pending FDA submissions. Chemular’s new Safeguard Mark I platform offers a patent-pending, external locking solution designed to retrofit existing containers while maintaining current branding and regulatory compliance status.

The Safeguard Mark I functions as an adaptable outer shell, allowing companies to meet safety standards without overhauling their manufacturing infrastructure or altering the physical dimensions of their cans. By utilizing a proprietary spring-based locking system, the device secures the product against child access while preserving the accessibility of UPC codes and label artwork. This approach aims to bypass the technical and financial hurdles that typically accompany container modifications, particularly for firms already deep into the Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) process.

Jason Carignan, Chief Commercial Officer at Chemular, noted that the industry has been paralyzed by the difficulty of balancing safety mandates with the high cost of redevelopment. The Safeguard system addresses this by requiring only a single application station, providing a streamlined integration path for diverse product lines. General Manager Sam Benaim emphasized that the design prioritizes both reliable child resistance and an intuitive user experience for adults. Chemular is currently engaging with brands to implement the technology across existing and future nicotine pouch portfolios.
