Surfshark launches real-time defense against surging SMS scams

Americans are being bombarded by an average of 19.2 billion spam texts every month, a figure that has nearly tripled since 2021. In response to this onslaught of smishing, cybersecurity firm Surfshark has rolled out a new real-time protection tool designed to intercept fraudulent messages on iOS and Android devices.

The feature functions by screening incoming SMS for suspicious patterns, including malicious URLs and questionable sender identities. Rather than relying on static lists, the tool employs AI-driven analysis to identify social engineering tactics that exploit urgency and human trust. Dominykas Simkus, Senior Product Manager at Surfshark, noted that the technology is specifically engineered to target the behavioral manipulation common in modern phishing, which traditional antivirus software often misses.

Integration varies by platform: iOS users will see suspected scams automatically shunted to their native Spam folder, while Android users receive proactive notifications that allow them to inspect messages within a secure, sandboxed environment inside the Surfshark app. The company emphasizes that the tool does not monitor general phone activity or retain private data to train its models. The feature is currently available to subscribers of Surfshark One and Surfshark One+ plans, requiring a manual update via the App Store or Google Play to activate.
