Scarlet robot Lightning shatters human half-marathon record

A scarlet autonomous robot named Lightning sprinted through a 13-mile course in Beijing this Sunday, crossing the finish line in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. The performance not only dominated the field of 12,000 human competitors but officially eclipsed the human world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds.

Engineered by smartphone manufacturer Honor, the machine utilizes 95-centimeter legs designed to mirror the stride of elite athletes and integrates liquid cooling technology borrowed from mobile hardware. Development took one year, resulting in a machine that makes last year’s robotics efforts look stagnant; while only six of 21 robots finished the 2023 race, 47 teams successfully crossed the line this year.

The human competition failed to keep pace, with the fastest runner finishing nearly 20 minutes behind the winner. In a display of mechanical superiority, the top three podium spots were claimed exclusively by Lightning units. While a remote-controlled version of the robot posted an even faster time of 48 minutes and 19 seconds, the autonomous models proved that machine-driven navigation and endurance have reached a threshold that human runners currently cannot match.
