Sandy Beach wastewater spill follows Tropical Storm Lala power failure

Tropical Storm Lala forced a temporary discharge of 717,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater near Sandy Beach on August 16. The spill occurred after a power outage crippled the Hawaii American Water facility, leaving the system struggling until backup generators were brought back online nearly three hours later.

The discharge began at approximately 3:45 p.m. HST and continued until crews restored generator power at 6:30 p.m. Normal utility power was fully re-established at the site by 9 p.m. that evening. Hawaii American Water, which serves roughly 30,000 customers, managed the restoration process while coordinating with local health officials.

Warning signs now line the affected shoreline to alert residents and visitors. Authorities advise the public to avoid all contact with the water in these areas until the Hawaii Department of Health confirms that safety standards are met and the signage can be safely removed.
