National Park Foundation Commits $5.5 Million to Service Corps Projects
Nearly $5.5 million in funding will mobilize 42 service corps projects across the U.S. this year, tasking youth, young adults, and veterans with essential maintenance. These crews operate under National Park Service guidance to bolster infrastructure, mitigate wildfire risks, and restore historic sites while providing participants with professional trade experience.

The initiative, now in its eighth year, focuses on tangible park improvements ranging from trail construction to structural fire prevention. Projects selected through a competitive process include American YouthWorks’ efforts at Hot Springs National Park and the Student Conservation Association’s placement of fellows within the NPS Structural Fire Program. Beyond general site maintenance, the foundation has earmarked $1.5 million specifically for 12 Maintenance Action Teams tasked with addressing urgent infrastructure needs by year-end.
Jeff Reinbold, President and CEO of the National Park Foundation, noted that the crews gain practical skills that often lead to careers in conservation or the trades. The program’s reach remains significant; in 2025 alone, funded teams maintained over 400 miles of trails and restored 2,400 acres. These efforts are sustained by a coalition of donors including the Malott Family Foundation, Carhartt, and American Airlines, ensuring the continued preservation of high-use and historically sensitive areas.
