Standard Bank and UnionPay Expand Digital Payments Across Africa
Nearly 900 merchants across nine African nations can now process online payments from UnionPay cardholders. The initiative, spearheaded by Standard Bank and UnionPay International, aims to dismantle cross-border transaction barriers and simplify digital commerce for businesses operating in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
This expansion builds upon a 2024 collaboration, reflecting a push to integrate African enterprises into the global digital economy. By adopting internationally recognized payment authentication, local retailers, tourism operators, and e-commerce platforms can now handle transactions in local currency or U.S. dollars. This shift is designed to improve conversion rates and provide a smoother checkout experience for international travelers and regional shoppers alike.
Bill Blackie, Chief Executive for Business and Commercial Banking at Standard Bank Group, noted that accepting trusted international payment methods has become a baseline requirement for businesses looking to scale beyond domestic borders. With UnionPay cards currently issued in 85 countries and accepted across 51 African nations, the move leverages an existing footprint of approximately 7 million cards issued within the continent. Mr. Feng Chen, General Manager at UnionPay International Africa Branch, added that the partnership aims to create a more connected digital ecosystem by providing cardholders with greater convenience when engaging with African merchants.
