BioArctic and Mesenkia Partner to Target Glioblastoma

The joint project focuses on the HVEM protein, which sits on the surface of glioblastoma cells and tumor stem cells. Researchers believe targeting these cells could mitigate the high rates of treatment resistance and tumor recurrence that define the disease. Under the terms of the deal, BioArctic will lead the development of a new drug candidate, followed by preclinical validation studies to assess the therapeutic potential of the combined technologies.

For BioArctic, the move marks a strategic shift beyond its core focus on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, signaling an expansion of its BrainTransporter pipeline into oncology. Mesenkia, a company with roots in research from Uppsala University and the University of Tokyo, provides the antibody expertise necessary to address the specific biological mechanisms of brain cancer. Both companies aim to use these initial preclinical results to determine the viability of future clinical development.
