IDF Opens Criminal Probes Into High-Profile Gaza Killings
Years after denying involvement in the deaths of civilians, the Israel Defense Forces announced Wednesday it is opening criminal investigations into the killing of 5-year-old Hind Rajab and the execution-style death of 15 first responders, while simultaneously clearing troops in other high-profile attacks on aid workers.

The military’s Advocate-General’s Corps released its first war crimes report since October 7, covering over 150 incidents. While the move signals a shift in official posture, critics and human rights organizations characterize the investigations as a preemptive measure to shield the state from mounting international legal pressure. The Hind Rajab Foundation described the announcement as a "charade" designed to maintain the appearance of accountability while perpetuating long-standing impunity.
The Pattern of Impunity
Independent investigations by groups like Forensic Architecture and international media outlets previously established that Israeli forces fired hundreds of rounds at the vehicle carrying Rajab and her family, as well as the ambulance sent to rescue them. Despite this evidence, the military previously claimed it had no troops in the area. Similar exonerations were issued Wednesday for the April 2024 strike on a World Central Kitchen convoy and a February 2024 attack on an MSF-staffed house. Data suggests that 88% of internal Israeli probes into alleged crimes in Gaza conclude without findings of wrongdoing, a trend that leads observers to view these latest inquiries as a strategic maneuver rather than a pursuit of justice.
