Implantica Cleared for U.S. Launch of RefluxStop Device
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted premarket approval to Implantica’s RefluxStop, an implantable device designed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease. The decision clears the Liechtenstein-based medtech firm to enter the American market, targeting a patient population estimated at 78 million people suffering from chronic acid reflux.

The regulatory green light follows a comprehensive review of five-year clinical data, which demonstrated the device’s safety and effectiveness in managing the condition. Unlike traditional surgical interventions that encircle the esophagus—often leading to complications like swallowing difficulties—the RefluxStop device aims to restore the natural anatomy of the gastroesophageal junction without applying external pressure.
CEO Peter Forsell described the approval as a defining landmark for the company, signaling a shift from clinical development to commercial execution. While the device is already established in Europe with nearly 1,800 procedures performed across nine countries, the U.S. rollout will follow a disciplined, phased approach. Initial operations will focus on training surgeons at selected centers of excellence to ensure long-term clinical quality as the company scales its presence in the world’s largest medical device market.
