Coconut Creek Launches Florida’s First Electric Waste Collection Fleet
Six zero-emission trucks now navigate the streets of Coconut Creek, marking Florida’s first fully electric residential recycling and waste collection program. This transition, a partnership between the city and Republic Services, replaces traditional diesel vehicles with specialized electric technology designed to reduce neighborhood noise and carbon output.
The new fleet utilizes McNeilus Volterra EVs, which the manufacturer describes as the industry’s first fully integrated, zero-emission collection vehicles. Beyond the environmental benefit, these trucks are equipped with advanced safety hardware, including 360-degree camera arrays, automated emergency braking, and lane-departure sensors. These systems aim to improve situational awareness for drivers while protecting pedestrians and motorists in residential areas.
Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman noted that the rollout coincides with the restoration of curbside recycling services, framing the fleet transition as an extension of the city’s broader innovation goals. For Republic Services, which manages the largest electric collection fleet in North America, the project serves as a model for municipal collaboration. The shift maintains the established collection schedule for the city’s 58,000 residents while pivoting to a quieter, cleaner logistical model in northern Broward County.
