TikTok to Pay $400 Million Settlement Over Child Privacy Violations
The U.S. Department of Justice has secured a $400 million settlement from TikTok, resolving a 2024 lawsuit centered on systemic failures to protect minors. Federal authorities alleged the platform harvested data from children without parental consent and ignored repeated requests to delete accounts belonging to younger users.

The financial penalty is structured in two parts: an immediate $300 million payment followed by an additional $100 million triggered once an order vacates a prior consent decree involving TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly. Officials characterized the sum as one of the largest recoveries in the history of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
Since the legal action commenced, the platform has overhauled its management and internal compliance protocols. TikTok claims to have implemented rigorous age-gating controls and strengthened parental oversight tools to address the federal government's concerns. Despite these shifts in operation, the company has not yet provided a formal statement regarding the finality of this agreement.
