NKT Unveils 525 kV Subsea Cable Capable of 90 °C Operation
NKT has officially qualified a 525 kV HVDC subsea power cable system capable of continuous operation at a conductor temperature of 90 °C. This technological leap allows transmission operators to increase energy capacity and optimize infrastructure design for offshore wind farms and cross-continent power grids.

The breakthrough relies on a redesigned insulation system featuring new semiconductive layers. NKT developed these materials in a joint project with Borouge International, utilizing the LE0650DC compound to ensure the thermal robustness required for high-stakes energy infrastructure. By raising the temperature threshold, the company enables utilities to either boost transmission throughput or reduce material consumption across existing HVDC networks.
Anders Jensen, Chief Technology Officer at NKT, noted that the advancement provides clients with greater design flexibility and cost-efficient deployment options. Bart Verheule, Vice President of Energy Marketing at Borouge International, added that the qualification of the LE0650DC material represents a milestone in long-term collaborative efforts to push the limits of extruded cable technology. The new portfolio covers both on- and offshore installations, including necessary power cable accessories, to support the growing global demand for high-performance renewable energy transmission.
