Digital Resurrection: How Tech Preserves the Longmen Grottoes
For over 1,500 years, the 110,000 Buddhist statues of China’s Longmen Grottoes have weathered wind, water, and human interference. Today, researchers at the Longmen Grottoes Academy are shifting from reactive conservation to high-precision digital preservation, using 3D scanning and virtual restoration to effectively undo centuries of decay.

The Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, house 2,345 caves and niches carved into the cliffs along the Yi River. As the stone faces erosion, the Academy has turned to modern technology to document and recover lost details. By employing 3D scanning capable of millimeter-level accuracy, teams can now create comprehensive digital records without physical contact, preserving the integrity of fragile carvings while enabling virtual repairs.
Advancing Virtual Restoration
Zhang Guofeng, deputy head of the Academy’s Exhibition and Digital Section, emphasizes that virtual restoration is not about creating a finished replacement, but rather a process of verification and historical witnessing. For the damaged Guanyin statue in the Ten Thousand Buddhas Cave, researchers synthesized historical photographs, color analysis, and sculptural expertise to reconstruct the missing head and arms digitally. This approach allows visitors to use augmented reality on their smartphones to view the statues in their original, vibrant state. Beyond the physical site, these digital assets decouple the heritage from the mountain, allowing the ancient artistry to reach global audiences through classrooms and virtual galleries.
