Chinese Humanoid Robots Shatter World Sprint Records
The 9.58-second 100-meter record established by Usain Bolt in 2009 has fallen to machines. During the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, the Tiangong Ultra clocked a 9.39-second dash, officially outpacing the fastest human in history and signaling a new threshold for bipedal engineering.

Developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, the Tiangong Ultra led a pack of high-speed contenders, with the Honor-developed Lightning finishing shortly behind at 9.47 seconds. The event, now in its second year, hosts 2,056 robots from 16 countries competing in disciplines ranging from football to boxing. The Tiangong Ultra further dominated the track by completing a 400-meter race in 38.16 seconds, significantly shaving down the 43.03-second benchmark set by Wayde van Niekerk in 2016.
While the performance metrics suggest a leap in mechanical agility, the reality of these sprints remains stark. Without the refined deceleration of human athletes, many robots collide with track-side barriers at full velocity. Footage from the games shows teams retrieving mangled hardware on stretchers, highlighting the gap between raw speed and the stability required for everyday tasks.
