Xiaomi Challenges Qualcomm With In-House Xring O1 Flagship Chip

Xiaomi has unveiled the Xring O1, a 3nm flagship processor designed to compete directly with the Snapdragon 8 Elite and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400. By debuting the chip in the 15S Pro smartphone and the Pad 7 Ultra tablet, the company signals a strategic shift toward vertical integration in its premium hardware lineup.

The Xring O1 marks a significant departure from Xiaomi’s previous attempts at silicon, moving far beyond the midrange capabilities of the 2017 Surge S1. The architecture utilizes a 10-core CPU, featuring two Arm Cortex-X925 prime cores clocked at 3.9GHz, supported by an Immortalis-G925 GPU. While official benchmarks remain subject to real-world testing, Xiaomi reports an AnTuTu score exceeding three million, positioning the chip alongside the current industry leaders.

To demonstrate the platform's viability, the company introduced the 15S Pro, a carbon-fiber-clad device that replaces the traditional Snapdragon architecture with the new O1. Alongside it, the Pad 7 Ultra showcases the chip's versatility, pairing it with a 14-inch OLED display within a 5.1mm frame. Xiaomi also expanded its silicon ambitions to wearables with the Xring T1, a specialized chip currently powering the new eSIM-enabled Watch S4.

This development creates a complex dynamic for Qualcomm. Although the two companies recently signed a multi-year agreement ensuring Snapdragon 8-series chips remain in future Xiaomi phones, the investment in the Xring series suggests a long-term goal of autonomy. Following Apple’s successful model of proprietary hardware, Xiaomi is betting that internal development will eventually provide both a performance edge and a buffer against external supply chain reliance.
