Boutari Winery Restores Historic Cellars with Crystalline Waterproofing

Groundwater ingress and structural decay threatened the underground aging cellars at Greece’s historic Boutari Winery in Stenimachos. To secure the 1978 facility without halting wine production, engineers deployed the Penetron crystalline waterproofing system, successfully sealing active leaks and reinforcing the concrete against long-term moisture pressure.

The restoration project at the Stenimachos site required a precise approach to structural repair. Because the wine barrels could not be relocated outside the facility, the crew repositioned them toward the center of each cellar to maintain access to the walls and floors. Project consultant VK Premium specified a multi-stage application process to address the concrete deterioration. After hydro-blasting the surfaces to expose cracks and voids, the team utilized PENEPLUG to stop active water flow, followed by PENECRETE MORTAR to fill structural gaps. A final application of a PENETRON slurry completed the treatment, creating an integral crystalline barrier within the concrete pores.

According to Theodor Mentzikofakis, Managing Director of Penetron Hellas, the crystalline chemistry provides a durable solution that reacts with moisture to seal micro-cracks permanently. This method allowed the winery to maintain operations despite the demanding nature of below-grade repairs. The project highlights an alternative to extensive demolition, demonstrating how specialized chemical treatments can rehabilitate aging infrastructure while minimizing disruption to industrial processes.
