BiomEdit Acquires Folium Science to Advance Veterinary Microbiome Tech

Indianapolis-based biotech firm BiomEdit has absorbed the technology platform and pipeline assets of Folium Science, integrating CRISPR-based microbiome tools into its veterinary health portfolio. The deal secures the poultry feed additive BiomElix® One—already authorized for use in Brazil—and expands BiomEdit’s capacity to engineer targeted biological functions in livestock.

The acquisition unites two distinct scientific approaches to animal health. BiomEdit specializes in Programmable Veterinary Biologics™, which engineer beneficial bacteria to perform specific tasks, while Folium’s Guided Biotics® platform utilizes CRISPR-Cas technology to selectively target specific bacterial populations without disrupting the surrounding microbiome. According to BiomEdit CEO Aaron Schacht, this combination provides a broader toolkit to address complex production and health challenges in the animal sector.

Following the integration, BiomEdit will manage two advanced poultry programs. The company’s lead candidate, BE-101, remains in the final stages of conditional licensure with the USDA Center for Veterinary Biologics for the treatment of necrotic enteritis. Meanwhile, the newly acquired BiomElix® One offers an immediate commercial footprint in the Brazilian market. While financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, the move consolidates a decade of research from the Folium team into BiomEdit’s existing infrastructure, which is backed by investors including Anterra Capital and Nutreco.
