Apple Updates Mac Studio with M5 Ultra Silicon
Apple has refreshed its Mac Studio lineup by unifying the series under the M5 architecture, finally debuting the long-awaited M5 Ultra. After a disjointed cycle that saw the desktop split between M4 Max and older M3 Ultra components, the new machines aim to consolidate performance across the professional creative workstation segment.
The hardware retains the familiar compact chassis introduced in 2022, complete with the legacy USB-A ports that remain a staple of the design. While the external appearance remains unchanged, the internal shift is significant. The M5 Max configuration starts at $2,499 with 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage. Stepping up to the M5 Ultra requires a $5,499 entry point, which includes 96GB of memory and 1TB of storage—a notable increase over the $3,999 launch price of the previous generation.
These machines ship with macOS 27 Golden Gate on September 22nd, sharing a launch window with the updated Mac Minis. Apple plans to roll out a specialized high-end M5 Ultra variant equipped with 512GB of memory in late October. Pricing for this top-tier configuration remains unannounced, though the hardware jump signals a premium shift for the company’s most demanding users.
