Industrial firms turn to AI agents to bridge workforce capacity gap
Industrial organizations are losing 41% of their operational time to repetitive manual tasks, forcing a rapid shift toward autonomous digital workers. As veteran engineers retire and strategic initiatives stall, companies are deploying AI agents to handle high-volume processes while keeping human oversight at the center of critical decision-making.

The widening capacity gap—the chasm between required output and available human labor—is now a primary drag on factories, utilities, and supply chains. According to research from The Futurum Group, 77% of decision-makers have shelved strategic projects simply because their teams lacked the bandwidth to execute them. In response, businesses are investing in digital workers at a two-to-one ratio, favoring automation that integrates directly into existing software rather than standalone pilots.
While the appetite for automation is growing, trust remains a significant hurdle. Only 5.7% of leaders currently feel comfortable letting AI act with full autonomy, a skepticism that favors human-in-the-loop models.
