The findings, derived from a secondary analysis of the SISPCT randomized control trial, indicate that the H3.1 nucleosome test provides a clear dose-response relationship with the severity of acute kidney injury. According to researchers, the biomarker allows for the stratification of risk in critically ill patients, independent of traditional diagnostic markers. An editorial accompanying the paper suggests the test's primary value may lie in identifying a distinct subgroup of patients experiencing NET-mediated organ injury.

Professor Michael Bauer of Jena University Hospital noted that the ability to forecast a patient's clinical trajectory early could significantly improve sepsis management. VolitionRx, the company behind the technology, is currently leveraging these results to accelerate commercial discussions within the diagnostics sector. With sepsis responsible for millions of deaths annually, the firm is targeting a $2.8 billion addressable market for its low-cost, accessible blood-based monitoring test.
