AMPERA Partners With Lawrence Livermore Lab for Advanced Nuclear Fuel
AMPERA has entered a strategic partnership with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to advance the production of Thorium-based TRISO nuclear fuel. The collaboration focuses on scaling domestic manufacturing capabilities, utilizing liquid-metal-jetting technology to support the company’s vision for compact, subcritical reactor platforms that operate for decades without refueling.

The project aims to refine the production of spherical thorium-232 kernels by optimizing droplet-based liquid-metal-jetting, a process previously prototyped by research teams at the laboratory. By integrating computational modeling with high-temperature process development, the partners intend to establish a secure supply chain for advanced nuclear fuel. This effort leans on proprietary manufacturing techniques, with AMPERA currently holding over 60 patents related to its liquid-metal-jetting and fuel-cycle technologies.
For AMPERA, the partnership is a critical step in vertically integrating its fuel supply to support the deployment of subcritical reactors. These systems, designed for industrial, maritime, and data center applications, utilize an external neutron source for enhanced control. Following the July unveiling of a 3D-printed silicon carbide core module, the company is positioning its technology to offer long-term, factory-built energy solutions. Dr. Viktor Sukhotskiy, the principal investigator at Lawrence Livermore, noted that the collaboration balances scientific rigor with the practical necessity of maturing advanced manufacturing for national security and commercial energy needs.
