Seaspan Secures Investment Grade Rating Upgrade from KBRA

The world’s largest independent containership owner, Seaspan Corporation, has climbed to investment grade status following a rating upgrade from Kroll Bond Rating Agency. The agency bumped the company’s issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings to BBB- from BB+, citing consistent operational performance and a robust, contracted cash flow profile.

This shift reflects a broader recognition of Seaspan’s resilience through volatile market cycles and its strategic expansion. KBRA analysts pointed to the company’s growing scale, a larger unencumbered fleet, and the increasing duration of its customer charters as primary drivers for the improved credit outlook. The agency also affirmed the company’s BBB rating for senior secured debt.

"This upgrade is a testament to the disciplined execution of our long-term strategy and our resilient business model," said Andreas Brauch, Seaspan’s Chief Financial Officer. The company currently manages an operating fleet of 247 vessels, with a total capacity reaching approximately 2.5 million TEU when accounting for pending newbuilds. As Seaspan continues to modernize its fleet with environmentally advanced vessels, the investment grade rating provides the firm with greater funding flexibility to support its ongoing growth and maintain its financial foundation.
