MacGregor Secures Market Lead with Automated Lashing Technology
With over one million units sold, MacGregor’s Hippo fully automatic twistlock is reshaping container vessel efficiency. As shipping lines scramble to boost cargo capacity and minimize port turnaround times, the Swedish engineering firm’s load-sharing systems have become a standard choice for both newbuilds and existing fleet retrofits.
The surge in adoption centers on the technical synergy between the maintenance-free Hippo twistlock and the patented Balanced Lashing System. By utilizing high-tensile steel and a specialized drop-lock mechanism, the Hippo eliminates payload loss through a 12mm vertical clearance. When integrated with the Balanced Lashing System, which disperses peak stresses across container stacks, operators can increase approved cargo weights by up to 10% without undergoing structural hull modifications.
Magnus Sjöberg, Executive Vice President of MacGregor’s Merchant Solutions Division, noted that the industry's warm reception reflects a shift toward maximizing earning potential through mechanical precision. Beyond the hardware, the company provides a comprehensive ecosystem including lashing bridges and optimization software. With more than 110 ships already utilizing the balanced system, the firm is positioning its cargo securing technologies as a vital tool for maritime operators aiming to reduce environmental impact and operational costs.
