The agreement follows a years-long Anishinaabe-led Impact Assessment, a community-driven process that shaped the operational guidelines for the mine. By integrating Anishinaabe law and traditional knowledge into the project’s lifecycle, the partnership ensures that environmental management, water protection, and cultural recognition remain central to the construction and closure phases of the site.

For the two communities, the deal creates pathways for employment, training, and business development. Leaders from both Nations emphasized that the pact is not merely a commercial arrangement but a mechanism to protect their traditional territories for future generations. For First Mining, the agreement provides a stable path forward for one of Canada’s largest gold resources, following the federal approval of the project’s environmental assessment in June 2026.
