Olympus Expands Surgical Portfolio with POWERSEAL Extended Jaw Launch

Surgeons in the U.S. and Canada now have access to the POWERSEAL Open Extended Jaw Sealer/Divider, a new bipolar instrument designed to streamline open procedures. The device, which integrates into the existing POWERSEAL 5mm portfolio, aims to improve precision in colorectal, gynecological, thoracic, urological, and vascular surgeries.

The device features a tapered, curved tip engineered for better visualization and access in restricted surgical spaces. Olympus designed the tool for single-handed operation, allowing surgeons to maintain focus on the procedure while reducing hand fatigue. It is capable of sealing vessels up to 7mm in diameter, including pulmonary tissues and lymphatics, with a specialized jaw coating intended to minimize tissue sticking.

Dr. Karim Alavi, Director of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at UMass Memorial Medical Center, noted that the instrument provides minimal heat spread, keeping energy focused precisely on the targeted tissue. The device is fully compatible with the Olympus ESG-410 and ESG-400 surgical energy platforms. Olympus plans to showcase the technology at several upcoming medical events, including the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in Washington, D.C., and the World Congress of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders in Toronto.
