For many startups, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards offer a vital lifeline, providing non-dilutive capital that funds complex testing and deepens government ties without sacrificing equity. However, Backswing Ventures observes a recurring cycle: a company secures a Phase I, pivots to meet the requirements of a Phase II, and then continuously chases new government solicitations to sustain operations. This trajectory often leads firms away from commercialization, turning technical talent into a resource for one-off prototypes rather than core product development.
Asman argues that the most successful defense companies treat government awards as force multipliers rather than destinations. The distinction lies in whether an award accelerates an existing roadmap or dictates a new one. When a company spends 18 months chasing a minor technical requirement simply because a program is willing to pay for it, it risks stagnating. Every engineer diverted to a custom prototype is an engineer failing to improve the product that will ultimately secure a defensible market position.
Founders should evaluate every grant through a single lens: does it make the company more valuable? The firm points to its own portfolio, including investments in Isengard Industries and Orion Edge, as examples of businesses focused on production and real-world deployment rather than research-stage dependency. Backswing Ventures maintains that true innovation in defense is defined by the product and its market adoption, not the volume of government R&D awards collected. With its Fund II recently surpassing 1.0x DPI in under three years, the firm suggests that this disciplined, product-first approach remains the most effective path for modern defense startups.
