SCHEELS Debuts Massive Cedar Park Flagship to Record Crowds
Hundreds of shoppers camped overnight in Cedar Park, Texas, to catch the first glimpse of a 300,000-square-foot retail behemoth. The August 29 opening of the 35th SCHEELS location signals a bold bet on experiential brick-and-mortar commerce, pairing traditional sporting goods with a 65-foot indoor Ferris wheel and saltwater aquarium.

The new flagship store serves as a direct challenge to the industry trend of downsizing storefronts. By integrating 80 specialty shops with attractions like a custom wildlife mountain and sports simulators, the employee-owned company is positioning its latest Texas outpost as a regional destination rather than a simple shopping stop. CEO Matt Hanson described the expansion as a commitment to creating a physical space where families can gather, emphasizing that the store’s scale is intended to foster long-term engagement.
This growth has a significant local economic footprint. The company hired 500 associates for the Cedar Park location, contributing to a national workforce that now exceeds 14,000 employees. Store Leader Lucas Hachmeister noted that the store's unique employee-owner model drives the level of service staff provide, distinguishing the brand from competitors. With this launch, SCHEELS now operates in 16 states, continuing a trajectory that began in 1902 as a modest hardware shop in Minnesota.
