Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners secures AUD 1.7 billion for Queensland wind project
A AUD 1.7 billion facility backed by 10 banks will power the Gawara Baya hybrid energy project in North Queensland. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners acquired the site from developer Windlab, marking a final investment decision that combines a 408 MW onshore wind farm with a 104 MW battery storage system.

Located on Gugu Badhun Country southwest of Ingham, the Gawara Baya development will feature 68 wind turbines. Once fully operational in 2030, the facility is projected to supply clean energy to approximately 240,000 homes, effectively preventing the emission of 1.2 million tonnes of carbon annually. Revenue stability for the venture is anchored by long-term offtake agreements with Stanwell and SmartestEnergy, supplemented by the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme.
The project serves as a cornerstone for Copenhagen Infrastructure V, the firm's fifth flagship fund. Beyond its energy output, the initiative is slated to inject over AUD 200 million into the regional economy. This capital infusion is expected to generate up to 500 direct and indirect jobs throughout the construction phase. CIP partners Thomas Wibe Poulsen and Yi-Hua Lu described the acquisition as a strategic deployment of capital that aligns with the firm's commitment to critical infrastructure development and local community engagement.
